Types of Indie Gamers

I think maybe that there are three types of indie gamers. There's burning wheel people, sorcerer people, and riddle of steel people.

Sometimes I feel like the last living riddle of steel guy.

Speaking of which, I want to play it again. A big 20-session campaign. I'll run.

Really? Cause I really love Riddle of Steel.

I'd be interested in hearing what you think are the fundamental divides between the three at some point.

Remind me about it in person.

[identity profile] yeloson.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You know what man? I totally forgot to ask you about this. Gargh.

[identity profile] benlehman.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
As any discussion of it on the internet will ineveitably result in Stupid.

I think we spoke about reward in the moment, reward for later, and how that tied into fiction before.

Anyway, maybe when I see you soon.

I am not an indie gamer, but I love Riddle of Steel. Especially when combined with Ars Magica.

"Indie gamer" isn't an identity.

Oh, Brand, you rebel. You, single-handedly, have prevented the formation of hegemonic identities of exclusion and repression on my livejournal.

Future generations will admire your great work.

I've never played Sorcerer, but I love the other two, as you know.

What about PTA people? (What I'm really asking is, like yeloson, what do you mean?)

I want to play your 20-session TRoS game. I don't care how the logistics work. I want to play.

Matt

What about PTA people?

That was my exact thought.

[identity profile] benlehman.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
My thought is that PTA falls well within the Sorcerer school of reward design.

Don't ask me to justify that.

I like riddles!

Don't tell me why! I want to get it by myself! Just tell me the category you would put these games:
- DitV
- Spione
- My Life With Master
- Contenders
- 3:16
- Annalise
- 1001 nights
- Inspectres
- Polaris
- Bliss Stage
- IAWA
- Breaking the Ice
- The Pool

I've never played any of those. The first published indie RPG I ever played is 1001 Nights. Am I not an indie gamer? Am I some sort of weird next-gen system?

You're a beautiful snowflake.

Yeah, whatever.

[identity profile] lxndr.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I like all of those games. Where do I fall?

[identity profile] benlehman.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
You, too, are a beautiful snowflake.

Any comment I post will be about trying to be a special snow flake.

I hope you get your chance to play Your Game!

[identity profile] benlehman.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

You can be a beautiful snowflake, too, if you want to be.

But for other reasons.

Hmm. I guess I mostly conflated Riddle of Steel people with Burning Wheel people, except for Burning Wheel is much more appealing to people who like shiny new supplement things, and Riddle of Steel is much more appealing to people who like things which aren't in print because the creator is in Iraq.

I miss it when more of the shiny-new people I knew were into TROS, because it generally worked great, except when someone tried to used some of the thornier supplement material.

[identity profile] benlehman.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think I'm, like, the only person in the world who sees a staggering difference between BW and Riddle of Steel.

[identity profile] wickedthought.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
I think there are two kinds of people: people who divide people into three groups of people, and people who don't.

You, John, are definitely a beautiful snowflake.

[identity profile] wickedthought.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hardly. I just think you've overestimated games and gamers.

Everyone is playing Dungeons & Dragons, regardless of the game they are playing.

I can make this argument on the web, but I won't because it will degenerate into Stupid.

Rich (http://rich-forest.livejournal.com/98844.html) beat you to it. (http://swingpad.com/dustyboots/wordpress/?p=136)

Actually, James Wallis beat all of us to it.

I don't have a link, but if you can find him, he'll tell you all about it.

[identity profile] wickedthought.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
And he's wrong. D&D isn't a roleplaying game. (http://wickedthought.livejournal.com/731689.html)

Your butt is a big, beautiful snowflake.
