Well, it's a matter of that I totally *could* set off on my own, but given that it is the beginning of winter, and I don't trust my navigation skills, I'd rather have a guide. Unfortunately, guides require advanced planning.

And freight trains from Eugene to Chicago, four days: no food, no water, no roof, no sleeping bag.
You're more of a traveler than I am now, but I still hold a few records. :)
