Unfortunately, it seems that visiting Baikal will require advanced planning. Like, at least a month ago.

Well, it's a matter of that I totally *could* set off on my own, but given that it is the beginning of winter, and I don't trust my navigation skills, I'd rather have a guide. Unfortunately, guides require advanced planning.

There was one hostel way out in the middle of nowhere, but they never wrote back to me :-(

You should have gone backpacking with us more when you were a kid. For the skills.

By the way, Mr. Long Train Ride, I once took the Greyhound from Portland, Maine to Arcata. Seven days and change.

And freight trains from Eugene to Chicago, four days: no food, no water, no roof, no sleeping bag.

You're more of a traveler than I am now, but I still hold a few records. :)
