I had a really interesting last couple of days -- this is the beginning of my attempt to blog them in reverse chronological order.

I just got back from dinner at the Qufu night market. I had:

1 something I don't know the name of, but I've been calling "biscuit sandwiches." They're bread with similar texture and shape as an American biscuit (but cooked on a hot griddle rather than baked), stuffed with fresh stewed meat and hot green pepper (minced together), followed up with a strange assortment of salts, spicies, and MSG. This one was *good* I was licking the juice off my hands.

A bowl of quite passable vegetable and meat dumplings (assorted)

6 spiced lamb shishkabobs. These were only okay, but it's one of my favorite foods and they were half the price of the ones in Beijing so I can't complain.

Another biscuit sandwish. Mmmm...

A really tasty dish which is a local speciality, and thus called Confucian Gate Folded Cracker. It's a folded and refolded crispy pastry with peanuts, salt, spices and dried vegetables inside. Kind of like a savory, dryer baklava. Verdict: tasty as hell.

Polished off with a big bottle of apple soda, my drug of choice here in China.

Lots of bargaining and joking around involved. A great time was had by all. I'm thinking about staying another night just to eat this food again
