So I spent last night with Frank T, of BARBAREN! fame, talking about his game and drinking and going to Hamburg's red light district to walk around and get hit on by the whores, which is apparently a pass-time of his, or at least is what he does when he has male visitors. Which is fitting, given that he is 7' tall, brawny, and has at least a 9" cock.
(Okay, maybe I'm lying a bit about his physical appearance.)
I was really surprised about how much cleaner (in terms of filth) and friendlier Germany's sleaze district was in comparison to, say, O'Farrell Street in San Francisco. I saw a lot of couples, both young and old, and groups of young men and women who looked very friendly, laughing and non-creepy. The whores were, well, creepy, but less signs (at least, overt signs) of drug addiction and I never felt worried about violence. There is an alleyway where you can walk along and women sit in windows and call to you as you walk by. "Whenever I need inspiration for BARBAREN!," sez Frank, "I just walk along this alleyway and it comes to me." It really is a scene out of a Howard short story. Except with less broadswords. Only Frank has one, but it makes it for it in being taller than I am.
(Okay, maybe I'm lying a bit about the broadsword.)
Afterwards, we had a beer in a nearby bar by the name of "Bar Barabar," which has to be the coolest bar name since "Bed" in Beijing. Frank and I had this great conversation, which I kept getting distracted from by making eye contact with this very cute girl sitting behind us and, later, next to us. Unlike the prostitutes, who were all big-breasted blonde women, she was totally my type -- dark hair that kept falling over her eyes, heart face, really cute smile, laughed a lot . When Frank and I were leaving, I went over to her and said "Hi, nice to meet you. I'm sorry I didn't come up and talk to you, but I only have one night in Hamburg, so I needed to spend it with my friend, here. But you're very good looking, and if I had two nights, I'd ask you out." She smiled and laughed, blushing, but I was out of there...
And now, of course, it looks like I will have a second night in Hamburg. Should have gotten her contact info. Ah, well.

solchen Reeperbahnbummel gemacht,
ist ein armer Wicht, denn er kennt Dich nicht,
mein Sankt Pauli, Sankt Pauli bei Nacht!
(Who never has, in joyful night
done such a stroll on the Reeperbahn,
is a poor little man, because he doesn't know you,
my Sankt Pauli, Sankt Pauli at night!)
Ask Frank, I am sure he knows the song and will gladly sing it for you. :)
The interesting part about the street of prostitutes is that women are not allowed in there. That really upset
And yeah, it's cleaner, and it also combines the red light district with the most happening clubs and bars in town as well as the musical hall, so the people hanging out there are a mixed bunch from all kinds of socio-economic backgrounds. Sad fact, though: a cousin of a classmate of mine is a streetwalker there. It was really shocking to see her there, even though I knew about it beforehand.
There are really good places there for your second night. The Star Club, sadly, is gone (that's where the Beatles became famous). I'm sure Frank will guide you in the right direction though.
