The U.S. Treasury dept. is run by John Snow. John Snow was, before being appointed by Bush The Younger, the chairman of CSX, the largest railroad in the U.S.. When Amtrak was federalized in 1970 by Richard Nixon, it was granted rights to use CSX's rails. CSX's stipulations were that CSX was not liable for any harm that came about due to CSX's rails and that CSX's schedule was to be uninterrupted.
What this means is that, when someone is hurt due to CSX negligence and Amtrak is involved at all, the hurt parties sue CSX, who then lose and require Amtrak to reimburse CSX.
What it also means is that, if a train is running a minute behind schedule and their CSX-granted window passes, the passenger train has to wait for the next available window. I've waited two hours.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Amtrak announced that it would stop serving food on trains because it's not profitable, clearly pushed by the federal government, thereby reducing the viability of train travel even further.
Now, consider the human elements: Snow, Bush, Nixon. And consider their relationship to the auto and oil industries. Now tell me where you see a conflict of interest. Bonus points for saying "Amtrak".
To die. In the rain.
