See that big swarth of red in the middle, running slightly west and north? Those are the welfare states, overwhelmingly.

aka the Bible Belt, so I'm not all that shocked. They are also the 'farmers' and such, so I think that's why they are poorer. We don't pay farmers.

Yes, farmers are underpaid. They also have some of the lowest (state) tax rates in the country.
