So part of designing Polaris is designing these little ritual phrases that you have to say at various points in the game. I had one in the first draft, which was "and so it was..." at the beginning and the end of each scene, and it was pretty well-recieved by playtesters.
I wrote some for chargen today. Thought you might enjoy them, just as pieces of writing.
The fun thing about this is, since you don't do it so much, they can be longer.
At the beginning of protagonist creation:
"Amongst the People, there was one not like the others, one who still dreamt the song of stars."
And, at the end:
"Then, once and all at once, [Knight's name] heard that plaintive plea within the soft and secret music of the spheres. And in that solitary moment [he/she] decided, and drew forth from [his/her] heart a sword of starlight, and resolved to drive back the mistaken, set right the world, and take [his/her] rightful place upon the high empyrean."
And that's my day so far. I'm hoping to go see the new Zhang Yimou moving today, and work on my Strategy and Tactics article for the new Daedalus E-Zine. Gamers -- if you have not read Daedalus, do. It kicks my ass and I'm proud for the chance to write for it.
