I'm trying to decide where to move again.
Options are:
Stay in Seattle
Portland, for a short time
SFBay
NYC
Beijing

With pluses and minuses to each. Thoughts and opinions welcome.

Really I just want to live in an apartment and not worry about food and employment and just design games that people love. But that seems unrealistic at the moment.

If in New York, I advise renting in Queens. Elmhurst and Flushing have great food, but cost of living is higher than in the Northwest. Not sure how it compares to the Bay.

(Insert predictable opinion about how great New York is.)

NYC and the Bay Area are roughly the same cost of living. In both cases, you can do fine but not by living in the most popular/trendy areas. I love the SFBay and would recommend it to anyone!

I'm partial to New York City, but only because it'll make you comparatively easier to show up in Europe sometimes (a shorter and cheaper flight than from either the Pacific Coast or China). Apart from that, well, good luck!

For obvious reasons I would vote for the Bay Area, but cost of living here and be hell and CA economy is making it hard for some folks to find jobs.

What're your pros and cons for each, I'm curious?

The advantages of Seattle and Portland is that they're cheap and I can keep trying to get my own projects off the ground.

The advantage of Beijing, NYC, and SFBay is that there's a lot more work in my field.

So those are kinda cross purposes. Really, i just need to figure out what to do with my personal projects.

Inorite?

I understand the feeling. I'll totally hang out with you if you hit Portland. No particular informational input.

Maybe some of the companies would be okay with you working 60% or something... I know that's an option that some people at my school take. And at Silicon Valley level of pay, 60% is enough if you live like a normal, non-Silicon Valley person.
