I made this resolution, jeez, four years ago? I need to renew it. I think it's an excellent resolution, and I'd recommend it to any friends.

I resolve to not know very much about media that I don't like. The bar for this is that if I can win an argument about something I don't like, I know too much about it.

Time spend studying stuff I don't like could be spent with things I love.

The phrasing is throwing me... That is, if you don't like winning arguments about it, you're not going to waste time learning about it?

Edited for clarity.

Is this more ugly media stuff that Alexis was looking at last night? Or in general?

Oh, no. That's academia, in which case I'll rip the fuckers a new one.

I'm talking specifically about books, movies, games.

This is a great rule to live by.

And this is why I avoid YouTube altogether...

It's funny. I can totally get into media whose *content* I don't give a damn about (or even actively dislike) if it's interesting on the "what does this mean and how does it mean it" level - if it's well-crafted as communication. But that's not the same thing as what you're talking about, I think.

This incidentally tends to make me pretty good at arguing about a few things I have no actual interest in. But I find it difficult to imagine deliberately going and *learning* stuff just so I can tear it up. Ick.
