I don't know what I call them that, but I do.

I have, for the last 5-6 years, struggled deeply and fundamentally with a section of my novel. I have tried to write it six ways to Sunday, tried to write around it, tried to cut it out entirely and, mostly, just tried to avoid it. I thought that I had trouble with it because it is, effectively, about a relationship, which are objects I have such trouble with.

For the last three years, I have had a figure of power in my head. She originally entered as via Innana's maidservant, Ninshubar, and rapidly took on a life of her own in my fantasy cosmology, which is really just a collection of natural and constructed archetypes that I enjoy. I have called her a lot of different things, but right now I call her The Lady of Chains or The Lady in Chains. If you've read Le Guin's "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" you've met her. The Lady of Chains has been insisting that I write a story about her for a long, long time.

I just realized where she belongs.
