For people local to us:
1) Food. Right now, Alexis can only get down things which are easy on her stomach, but bringing food (particularly stuff that refrigerates well) will spare me from doing an astonishing amount of cooking.
2) Company. Alexis can basically take care of herself, but it's possible she'll need someone to help her get around, etc. Thus, if I'm going to be out of the house for an extended period of time, it's a good idea for someone to be with her just in case she needs some help with getting something or getting somewhere. Also, of course, she'd love to see friends.
3) Distractions. Lying in bed all day can be boring. We'd love to have books (young adult fantasy is her specific request: nothing too mentally strenuous, since she's zonked out on opiates), movies, comics, or anything like that. We can return any of this stuff after it's used.
For everyone:
4) Love. Feel free to call, e-mail, leave comments on Alexis's LJ and so on and so forth.

- Combine onions, oil and salt in a soup pot. Fry until onions begin to brown.
- Add chicken thighs, with skin and bones. Continue to fry, stirring moderatley, until chicken begins to brown.
- Add carrots and celery. Fry a little more.
- Add a cup of white wine or non-bitter beer (pale ale is good) and a few quarts of water. Add bay leaf and dash cayene powder or paprika. Do not add more salt at this point.
- Simmer a few hours until chicken falls off the bones. Check broth for saltiness and add salt if necesary.
- In a bowl, combine white flour, dash salt, dash baking powder. Mash butter into flour and mix till butter is in pea sized or smaller lumps. Add whole milk and mix. Dough should be firm enough to pull away from the side of the bowl as a clump, but still almost liquid. Spoon dough into simmering soup, cover with lid, wait about ten minutes for dumplings to cook.
Good luck, bro.
