This shit again.
It's tangential to the thread, so I'm posting here.
1) The US has a more gender-imbalanced population than China.
2) The US has a higher rate of infanticide than China.
3) At no time in any history of the world has a culture had an infanticide rate high enough to substantially skew the population, let along cause massive social trends. This includes China during the great famines and during the one-child policy.
4) Consider, briefly, before you talk about modern Chinese population figures, that for the last twenty years (during the 1-child policy), the standard for the vast bulk of the Chiense population has been to have lots of kids, but only register the oldest male. The female children (and all the other male children) aren't dead, just invisible to the government.
Lastly, can I just add how really fucking insulting Sydney's general line of argument here is? "See, those Chinese just can't control themselves" (oddly, he doesn't pick on Chinese polygyny, which was rampant during that time because of rich-poor gap and all the murder and in-fighting going on between men.) The Boxer Rebellion was caused by foreign, invasive powers controlling the government, shitting all over the people, and forcibly addicting a nation to opium. Saying it was caused by a non-existent gender imbalance is like saying that the American colonies only revolting because of, I don't know, toxins in the water supply.

I hate it when people say this, because it sounds like an argument-stopper, but not in this case: do you have sources for the numbers for this anywhere? If that's true, I'd be really interested in reading more about this.
