There is a saying that I ran into courtesy of the book "The Sparrow." I do not know the origins, and I'm not going to bother to look them up.
"A man on a boat had committed some grave offense, and was sentenced to 100 lashes with a cat'o'nine tails. Miraculously, he survived. Someone asked him what he did to deal with the pain. He replied.
'Eventually, you become full of pain, and then there is only a drum beat.'"
I wonder when it was that I became full of pain, because this is only drum beats.
