A Missing Moment

After the exams, the whole program, less one teacher and one student, walks to lunch together. It is raining and, in Arcata style, I have no umbrella.

After the exams, the whole program, less one teacher and one student, walks to lunch together. It is raining and, in Arcata style, I have no umbrella.

<You don't have an umbrella?> the enormously cute young teacher asks.
<No, I lost it two weeks ago> I say.
<Here, use mine> she holds out her hand.
<No, no,> but I get under it with her anyway.
She passes off the handle to me <I'm too lazy to carry it>
It's a small umbrella, and a little tight for two people, even two short people like us.
<You ought to buy a new umbrella>
<Eh, I'm leaving tomorrow>
<It doesn't rain in your California hometown?>
<No, it rains a lot, I'm just used to it.>

We talk some more.

<So, when you're in China, are you going to find a Chinese girlfriend?>
<Not sure yet.>
<Oh, you ought to. Chinese girls are very nice.>

Well, yes...

Consider my mind slightly blown.

Always have...

... but this sounds like a better excuse than many.
